reverse dns?

Posted by olddocks, 01-13-2008, 05:55 PM
i read somewhere that genuine emails i send from my site are not properly received by yahoo, aol and they have placed my email to bulk folders. Is this because i havent created a reverse DNS entry in my server? how actually to create a reverse dns to my site with cpanel?

You'll need to discuss that with your provider. They might just do the PTR record for you.

thanks would that be enough if i create reverse entry for my nameserver? Will it help for all my reseller accounts in properly receiving mail? oh! has anybody used SPF TXT record in sending mail without being classified as spam? Last edited by olddocks; 01-13-2008 at 07:00 PM.

It will not help, you need either to ask your provider to do the reverse DNS or assign the IPs to your nameservers so that you yourself can do the reverse DNS. SPF records is getting more and more useful when sending to free emails like yahoo and hotmail, it might keep your emails out of the spam folder.

You need to set reverse dns for the main server IP. All mails on the server are routed through the main server IP. The mails of the domains configured on a dedicated IP are also send through the main server IP.

Why is my outgoing email being blocked by AOL, Yahoo, and Hotmail, etc?" http://www.spamstopshere.com/resourc...27-q45.html#45

i host many domains on my server. do i need to create the SPF record for each domain or just the main server?

SPF records are set up per domain. If you don't know how to set them up, it's best just to make sure that you don't have any to ensure delivery.

Thanks Mark i did try setting up SPF record for my domains. I decided to give a test. i tried to send email to my yahoo account and it looks like email is placed in bulk folder. It doesnt come in main inbox. dont know what could be the problem there nonethless i had asked my host to setup reverse dns for my nameservers.

I don't think that having SPF records will make yahoo recognize your email as good, but definitely having SPF records and then sending from an unauthorized host will result in blocked email. Besides those first four things, make sure that the recipient's email address is in the To header: 1. Making sure your outgoing mailserver has a PTR record for it's IP address 2. Makings sure that your mailserver's hostname resolves (the hostname advertised in the greeting/EHLO). 3. Your SPF record doesn't have you sending from a host not authorized in the SPF record 4. The domain in the sender address resolves If it still gets sent to the bulk folder, follow that link to postmaster.hotmail.com.

hmmm! here is what i got from my host. they set me a rdns and i checked it and looks like this.. IP -> ns1.mydomain.com is that ok? now, i got new problem. i checked my domain with dslreports.com and it shows that reverse dns entry for mail server fail. again got me confused?

Is your MX record set to ns1.mydomain.com? - if not, you don't have a rdns entry for the DNS address of your mailserver, thats what its needed for.

Send me an email through your email server to support@ the domain in my signature (sans the www hostname), and I'll tell you if you have any DNS config problems.
