Editting the default web page using SSH

Posted by MrDGOrman, 03-09-2010, 09:44 AM
This might be in the wrong section - if so, ma bad. Anyhow, I've just got my first VPS and wanted to change the default IP address page, the "Default Web Site Page", if you get my drift. I've been told that this needs to be done via SSH, so I looked into it. I've got nowhere. I've tried adding a index file to public_html and /usr/local/apache/htdocs - all via SSH, and its made no effect on the default page. Would really appriciate some help on this, points in the right direction etc as google is doing no favours for me. Thanks

What distro your VPS is running? Is Apache installed using Distro's package management or custom build (cpanel, etc.)?

Sorry but I'm new with all this, so I dont really understand what you mean when you say distro, sorry This is the specs of my VPS if that helps: VPS #1 (Virtual Private Server) - vePortal (03/07/2010 - 04/06/2010) OS Template: CentOS 5 - 32-BIT Control Panel: CPanel/WHM - Unlimited Domains - (CentOS/Fedora) Its the first VPS at BurstNET, with cpanel/whm as a extra. Sorry if this is a stupid answer aha

OK. Your distro (or properly called Linux Distribution) is CentOS and you are running custom build Apache (with cpanel). In this case, creating a (or editing an existing) file in /usr/local/apache/htdocs with name index.html should work.

Does it have to be index.html ye? or can it be .php?

if you want a simple HTML file, name it index.html or you want to use PHP, name it index.php
