Free host sites.
Posted by abbas, 09-17-2001, 06:01 AM Hi. I want to start a free host site similar to www.geocities.com or http://www.fortunecity.com/ etc. What I want to do is to use it so that I can learn skills like advertising that works, and then transfer them to setting up a web host. This way, I will not lose money while I try and find the ads that work. Now, in the UK, there is a web host called www.portland.co.uk which allows me to provide such a service. There is also wigloo.com. Are there any others and have you had any experiences of using them?
Posted by Chicken, 09-17-2001, 09:12 AM Popular provider: http://communityarchitect.com/ But you'd probably do better asking at: http://www.freewebspace.net/forums Note: I moderate there as well, but don't know where else to tell you to go for information...
Posted by abbas, 09-17-2001, 11:02 AM Thank you. I shall check the sites out.
Posted by AL-Benjamin, 09-17-2001, 04:24 PM i used portland for free sites. i got nearly 3000 users at one point. the be honest though you can only really use portland if you don't mind an absolute lack of support and service that probably verged on about 50% uptime. Good to get a name, just be prepared to move quiclky.
Posted by CoreyC, 09-17-2001, 10:32 PM Communityarchitect.com has been excellent for me.
Posted by abbas, 09-18-2001, 06:05 AM Hi, Which service did you use, i mean paid or free. Have you managed to get users on and how many. The point being, that if you have a significant number of users, then maybe they might be good to try?
Posted by CoreyC, 09-18-2001, 09:58 AM Currently, I have over 3,000 members. I use the free service. I really havent done much lately but let it sit there. They handle all of the support for you, and from what I have noticed from some of my own support requests in the past, they have a pretty solid response time.
Posted by jolly, 09-19-2001, 03:26 AM Do they also offer control panel and gives you root access for the server. If everything is for free than whats point of paying for server.
Posted by CoreyC, 09-19-2001, 08:40 AM They don't give you root access to the server They do give you a very nice control panel though. They also allow you to host your own site, in fact I think they require it.
Posted by jolly, 09-19-2001, 08:49 AM Which control panel they give? PLESK or ENSIM
Posted by CoreyC, 09-19-2001, 09:19 AM It's an in house control panel, something their developers put together I assume. Keep asking these questions, you are doing wonders for my post count
Posted by jolly, 09-19-2001, 09:38 AM Is there any company that provide dedicated linux servers with full control and Plesk or Ensim. And domain names too. I can put there logo in each website if they can provide server and domain.
Posted by abbas, 09-21-2001, 05:51 AM So how did you get those users, I mean did you advertise or what?
Posted by jolly, 09-21-2001, 06:01 AM Chicken, Is there any company that provide dedicated servers with root access for free.
Posted by abbas, 09-21-2001, 06:32 AM Hey, would you believe http://www.freededicatedservers.com/ worked. In order to get a server from them, your site needs to have at least 2000 "page views" per day. I don't know about ads etc.. I will contact them.
Posted by CoreyC, 09-21-2001, 09:18 AM With all of the 'freebie' sites out there, promoting a fee site is not difficult at all =].
Posted by Kevin Teoh, 09-21-2001, 10:44 AM I highly doubt that But go ahead and try: http://www.freededicatedservers.com/ *cough*SCAM*cough*
Posted by abbas, 09-21-2001, 01:43 PM What, have you used them?
Posted by akashik, 09-21-2001, 03:13 PM He's probably heard the same stories of people being shut off after making them money as I have. I tend to cough the same way regarding them Though of course I have no personal experience *yadda yadda* so I'm probably wrong.... walks like a duck, talks like a duck... Greg Moore
Posted by abbas, 09-23-2001, 04:56 PM Where were you shut off from? Email me if you do not want to post here. (It's so I know who to avoid...)
Posted by Chicken, 09-23-2001, 06:17 PM There were a couple of threads about them (about people who were scammed) on http://www.freewebspace.net/forums and that URL was previously censored here (though in a server switch this must have been lost), due to them board-spamming the forums. Their methods of advertising (board-spamming) have made them a complete joke at more than one forum in the past and personally, I'd say they're a duck. Posted by abbas, 10-02-2001, 08:45 AM mmmm.... I might give http://www.freededicatedservers.com/ a miss. I keep on looking and post if there is anything *good*.
