I very much doubt you could find one that would specifically cover those topics, choose and operating system buy a book on it if that is your way of learning try out some software learn the basics and keep at it. Nothing worse than a book based sysadmin.

Probably a book on linux administration would be most helpful. If you don't know how to do basic linux administration you will have a hard time understanding other concepts like web hosting administration or VPS etc. It will give you a good foundation to learn from.

There isn't one. But if you can get a hold of RedHat's (RHCE) or Novell's (NLCP) course materials (it's legally required to attend the course to get its materials), it would be a good start.

Best thing to do is get a small unmanaged VPS and start playing around. When I got my first VPS I so thouroghly messed it up I had to get a fresh install done This was within one hour of gettting it set up lol.

That's very true.. How much time it took to learn enough to manage your own server?

LOL Been there and done that. I went to school, course this was in the early 80's and at that time the test machine we used you had to boot from reel to reel tapes. When I decided to get into hosting, it was quite by accident, I found my courses had not prepared me for the ever chaging pace that the internet new machines and various types of hosting. Then I pursued the Lunix certification courses and the world opened up for me like the last day of a cold.

I'm still learning, just like everyone else. You learn something new all the time. My specialty is sales. I could sell a bag of dog poop to a person for $200 if I tried . I just surrounded myself with people that do the other things in a hosting business better than me lol. But, to manage my own server? Probably a few months until I was comfortable running things in the command line. And quite a bit of time to configure a server, get it set up, and manage it. I don't know for sure. But, I've been around the hosting industry for 6 years now. I worked for a friend as a level 2 tech at the beginning. Then after a few months I was a co-owner. He decided to sell out, I took my portion, and started my own company . It was about 6 months until I was completely comfortable to manage it myself. There were still things I wanted to learn how to do. Really it all depends on how well you learn, how you learn, and how much time you spend at it. I also took a couple courses in Linux administration in college (just finished my Bachalors, working towards Masters now lol) For a hosting company, I'd recommend quite a bit more time than that though.

I recommend: LPI Linux Certification In A Nutshell 2nd Edition 2006 (oRelly) Googling, you can find the book in CHM format

Koikoo, that book you linked looks pretty good through the Google Preview. I was thinking about getting that one but it looks pretty outdated and should be more of a reference for current linux server administrators moreso then a book that will get you started. My question is, what is a common distro most webhosting companies use when it comes to linux servers? Redhat? Would anyone be able to recommend a bit more of an updated book? My recommendation is to get a small server to play with. You should also get a control panel to get you started.

It's hard to find a good book that is complete; the problem is that the field is actually quite big, and it changes a lot every year so books get old in about 3 years. For cPanel, packt have a good book which you should get, one of the few out there. For server OS, usually Centos these days (aka RedHat).

If your main goal is to learn web hosting server management, the best method is to get a server and play around with it for some time, or get a part time job in a hosting company to have some experience.

start playing with virtual machines

Posted by mugo, 04-23-2009, 05:31 AM
Get yourself a small VPS, virtual machine, or put linux on an old machine you may have... Then, Google. You can spend the money on a book, but there's nothing in it you won't find on the 'net. Start with basics, those will lead into questions, google your questions, before you know it, you'll be surprised at the cumulative knowledge as it starts building.
