Booting from external HDD

Hey, I want to install Linux Ubuntu onto it, the thing is i dont know how to boot to it, there a partition one with XP backup files and one with Linux files I need it to boot from the Linux one so i can install it onto the HDD... but I dont know how I go into the BIOS and change Removable to top but it says it cant find anything... Any Help? Daniel
